. . . today on the treadmill, this song came on Pandora.
Mumford and Sons ~ The Cave
It took every ounce of my willpower to not do this with the beat at the end of the song.
Captain Capitalism is going for discipline over the next month. I started Friday. Yeah, I was supposed to start two months ago but sicknesses and back pain had other plans for me. I’m back now and after five days, the gym giddiness is obviously kicking back in. So, if your at your local gym and you see some woman rocking it out on the treadmill or banging her head in the weight room, come on up and say hi. It just might be me. :)
Haha, I’d like to see you do that. I love Mumford and sons. I called our local gym and found out they close at 5:30 every evening, crazy small towns. I’m planning on taking up running again once March starts, it’s coming too quickly.

I couldn’t stop quietly yelling “and IIIIIIII” at my desk at work. Good music is a powerful and wonderful thing.
haha, I like that song too
Spence,
Welcome and thanks for leaving a comment.
I will often be seen tapping my foot and lip syncing at the gym. While at home with my kids I will sing at the top of my lungs and dance around the house to good music. Can’t help. They think I’m crazy but we have so much fun.
Kate,
About five minutes later I was thinking of you because this came on. Every time they said HEY! I had to keep myself from jumping as I didn’t want to land on my face from falling off the treadmill!
That is my favorite Pandora station – “Mumford and Sons”, they mix great songs with it. Of course MaS is the bestest! “And I’ll find strength in pain and I will change my ways…”
Glad to hear you’re getting back at it!
Wow. And I was thinking about that thread, myself, when I read this one!!!
One of my students did an analysis of “Little Talks” for a poetry project I did this year. Fun, fun!
Sis,
That’s too bad about your local gym. There are some definite upsides about small town gyms. The hours they keep are not one of them. You might be able to find a used set of dumbbells at Craigslist. You would be able to do a whole lot right from home.
SD,
I’m glad to finally be back. Thanks. It usually takes me about two weeks to get back in the groove so right now I’m pretty tired. Looking forward to the endorphin rush again!
You would hate my playlist! Mostly industrial hard core and rap core metal.
I haven’t gotten off my exercise regimen this winter at all – matter of fact, I have turned it up a few notches (and accelerated during T-Giving and Christmas.) My dead lift, bench press and military press are back at levels my body hasn’t seen since I was 22 years old and my squats are getting there! I do 10 sets of squats twice a week – it’s not fun but boy oh boy does my butt look great. My husband cannot believe my body. I haven’t had a 24″ waist since I fit into my mother’s size 2 wedding dress when we got married. Working out is great.
BTW I do it all in my basement with barbells an adjustable bench, a few sets of dumbbells and a step machine. You really do not need fancy equipment just dedication and a ~log book~. I am not competing with anyone but myself down there, no one gives a rat’s behind if my lifts go up or how many sets or reps I do but me. And so I write them down (ok, really I put them in a database so I can graph out my progress in linked Excel spreadsheets but that’s not important right now!) and challenge myself every workout: either more weight, more reps or more sets. Sometimes all three!
Mark Rippetoe’s Starting Strength and Mehdi’s StrongLifts5X5 is what I use the most, plus some additional isolation exercises per body part and cardio sprinkled in liberally. Running on the road, or the step machine. On super nice days I have even been able to get my bike out for a ride.
Working Out: The only way to really fly. Well and horse back riding too … but we are at least another month away from that to start gearing up.
Mina,
I cannot wait to get back to the weight I was lifting before I had to stop in the fall. I’m glad to hear that you were able to go through the season.
Regarding my playlist. That’s just the one for cardio. It’s VERY different than my weight lifting playlist. The Mumford and Sons is upbeat and happy which makes me go harder and faster for cardio. My weight lifting is Black Label Society, Godsmack, Birthday Massacre, In This Moment and others like this. I can’t stand rap, though. It would never make it on my list. However, I can completely understand why people want it on there. It’s hardcore and perfect for training.
ooooooo!! I just discovered Black Label Society, they are incredible!! You gotta try Rage Against the Machine (rap core) – really good stuff. If you like BLS you’ll like Rage
(I don’t like rap, either)
btw: I will say that mid-Jan to mid-Feb was really, really tough. I had to make myself workout every time. I am starting to think I have that SAD thing where you just want to go to bed at dark every day (~5pm) It wasn’t fun but I did get through it. Part of what got me through it was knowing that I was still forwarding my lifting progress even though I wasn’t enjoying it like I thought I should. Kept me going.
Ahh, to have a barbell in the basement! We live in a condo with a very tiny gym, so the best I can do for squats is a 60 lb dumbbell which I hold vertically between my legs. My hands get tired before my legs do
I’ve gotten myself a serious booty by going super-heavy on the leg press though
Oh sorry. I didn’t know the difference between rap core and rap. I would like Rage Against the Machine then.
My problem with fall/winter is allergies. They’re horrible. As in, in bed, hard to walk horrible. They affect my ears and head which makes me very tired, nauseous, and dizzy. The gym is pretty much out and unfortunately this year was particularly bad.
I’m looking at my playlist now and you might also like Killswitch Engage, Skillet, Lacuna Coil and Pantera. Though I think Killswitch and Pantera would most likely be more up your alley. I’ve got a ton more if you have any interest. My playlist is absurdly long as my husband is very much into music.
My all time favorite lifting song is Bad Girlfriend by Theory of a Dead Man. Though Maritus recently introduced me to 30 Seconds to Mars and I really like them a lot as well.
Phedre,
You probably already know this but have you tried wrist straps to help your hands from pooping out before your legs? They somehow change to torque to your grip and make it much easier to lift heavier weights.
OH! And Maritus just told me about a new band he recently found called Five Finger Death Punch. I just started listening to them five minutes ago and so far I like some of their songs. Some of the songs they just yell throughout and some they sing. I vastly prefer the singing. Same with Killswitch.
Stingray, I hadn’t heard of those. I’ll get some to try if I come across them. Or maybe I’ll just get a 75 lb kettlebell and then I have an actual handle to hold on to
I would love to see your playlist, I am going to check out the ones you posted already. I am bored to tears with my playlist, need new stuff!! Thanks.
I like to work out to Rammstein
Mina,
It’s been a busy weekend so I won’t have time to post that playlist today. I will try to do it in the next couple of days.
oh, my ! NO rush!!
I’ve lived with my playlist for this long another couple of weeks won’t kill me
Checking out the Rammstein, too. Any tracks you like in particular, Phedre?

Thanks!! This is great. I have all of the BLS – good selection. They have new albums, you know? I haven’t checked them out yet. I will and report back, in payment for your efforts. Thank you a ton. can’t wait to check them out.
Mina,
Order of the Black is their newest album I believe. Overlord and Crazyhorse are from that one. Parade of the Dead is also very good from it as well.
Good stuff, wow. Thanks. My playlist is refreshed and I look forward to my workouts refreshing a bit, too. Squatted last night I think I did like 150 reps. Boy is my butt burning. LOL
This is some seriously “hard” stuff – Stingray I am shocked! (but in a good way!!)
Mina,
I’m really glad you liked the playlist. There are certain songs on there that will come on just when I think I am reaching failure, then when I hear the music I can push out 2-3 more reps. I love it.
